Cuba Wins Women’s Centrobasket Tournament

Havana, Cuba.-  Defending champions Cuba beat host Puerto Rico 85-67 to win the Central American and Caribbean Women’s Basketball Tournament or Centrobasket 2008 that concluded in this Caribbean island on Monday.

Thus, the Cuban squad concluded the tournament undefeated after consecutive victories over Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominican Republic and Mexico in semifinals.

Yakelin Plutin led the Cuban attack on Monday with 26 points while Oyanaisis Gelis and Suchitel Avila contributed 12 and 11 units, respectively.

In the other game of the day, the Dominicans downed Mexico 81-73 in the bronze medal match.

The top three finishers of this event received tickets for the World Championship qualifier of the Americas that will take place in Brazil in June 2009. (acn)
